Jemma Cromie, Peita Tawhara, Zarra Houpapa, Stacee McLellan and Natasha Makan formed Guttered Enterprises as part of the Young Enterprise scheme in 2012. They attend Chilton Saint James School, in Lower Hutt.
Jemma said “We have come up with a product to sell to New Zealanders, to stop water dripping onto the bathroom floor after opening the shower door.”
“According to ACC statistics, the bathroom was one of the most dangerous rooms inside the home with 11,000 people injured after slipping from a wet floor. We entered this competition because we aim to reduce that statistic, by helping to prevent accidents caused by this everyday hazard that people have (until now) ‘just put up with’.”
“Hence our mission statement was born: To ensure that water stays in the shower and off the floor. To stop the drips and save the slips.”
The idea:
The Shower Gutter collects water from glass shower doors and funnels it back into the shower to stop it dripping on the floor and creating a hazard.
The judges said “This idea appealed to us because it was unique and offered a realistic design solution to a known hazard – even in very modern bathrooms. If it was fitted in all suitable showers it would not require the user to do anything at all to control the hazard and therefore could be very effective.”
